NEW BERN - James Francis Quirk, a resident of 206 8th St., passed away on June 16, 2017, at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center at the age of 82.

Born in 1934 in The Bronx, New York, to Irish parents Michael and Elizabeth Quirk, Jim received a Catholic education, graduating with a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Iona College in 1957. He worked as a Senior Design Engineer for Westinghouse Electric Corporation, developing new designs for nuclear reactors and missile defense systems, and nine U.S. patents.

Born in 1934 in The Bronx, New York, to Irish parents Michael and Elizabeth Quirk, Jim received a Catholic education, graduating with a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Iona College in 1957. He worked as a Senior Design Engineer for Westinghouse Electric Corporation, developing new designs for nuclear reactors and missile defense systems, and nine U.S. patents.

In 1991, James retired and moved to New Bern with his wife Cirila and son Roland. Jim enjoyed family, writing, reading, sailing, hiking and travel. Jim was an avid sailor and volunteered at the New Bern Police department. He wrote a regular column for the New Bern Herald newspaper, detailing his travel experiences and philosophies.

The last of four siblings, Jim is survived by his wife of 30 years Cirila, son Roland, daughters Dolly, Kathy and Suzy, and 14 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jim was happiest when he was playing with his grandchildren and working in his garden.
