Mary Margaret Ward Hawes, 83, of New Bern, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 15, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

The matriarch of her family, Mary was a no-nonsense lady who loved taking care of others, whether it be cooking a meal and feeding family or hosting friends for get togethers. She was always on the move and enjoyed planting flowers, working in her yard and dancing. She was a member of the Elk's Lodge in both Wilmington and New Bern and also a member of Scott's Hill Baptist...

Mary Margaret Ward Hawes, 83, of New Bern, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 15, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

The matriarch of her family, Mary was a no-nonsense lady who loved taking care of others, whether it be cooking a meal and feeding family or hosting friends for get togethers. She was always on the move and enjoyed planting flowers, working in her yard and dancing. She was a member of the Elk's Lodge in both Wilmington and New Bern and also a member of Scott's Hill Baptist Church.


Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, June 3rd at Temple Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

She is survived by her four children, Paula Mercer, Cheryl Oliver, Harvey Godwin, Jr., and Robbie Godwin; two stepchildren, Ronnie Hawes and Bryan Hawes; two sisters, Gladys Ward Johnson and Alene Ward Fadel; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert B. Hawes; her parents, Luther Ward and Mollie Todd Ward; three sisters, Alta Ward, Eula Simmons, and Vonsie Ward; and stepson, Glenn Hawes.
